Understanding Microsurgery and Tools Used

Microsurgery

Microsurgery, as the term suggests is a discipline in surgery that uses the magnification with advanced diploscopes (microscopes) and specialized precision surgical tools for various operations. Microsurgery is an important part of neurosurgery, as microsurgery techniques are used to coapt nerves. It is also used to anastomose small blood vessels and coapt arteries and veins. Microvascular and microneural coaptation is an integral part of repairing damaged tissues after trauma, accidents or cancer. The main areas where microsurgery is used today are transplanting tissue from one part of the body to another, reattach amputated parts and in organ transplanting. Microsurgery is used to heal deep wounds, restore complete or partial functioning of a body part after a trauma, and to restore form and functionality after cancer.

While among common population microsurgery is often defined as a ‘surgery requiring a microscope’, the actual definition and scope of microsurgery is far different. While microsurgeon will obviously use microscope, but that is a small part of this specialty, that definition cannot fully convey the complexity of the procedure. The procedures are a combination of surgical science, extreme skill acquired through extensive training and finally high end precise microsurgical instruments.

The microscope used for a microsurgery has two binocular viewing fields, and in technical term is called as a diploscope. A diploscope will allow the primary surgeon as well his assistant to perform the surgery under magnification. The magnification can range from 4 to 40 times, depending on the type of surgery performed. Such magnification enables visualization of small parts like slender nerves, capillaries, arteries, veins and lymphatic systems. The magnification can help a surgeon with

  1. Replantation – usually reattaching amputated tissues.
  2. Microvascular Transplantation – Transplanting tissues from one part of the body to another with complete coapting of blood vessels.
  3. Neurosurgery – repairing and coapting nerves.
  4. Manage and repair soft tissue and bone infections.

When microsurgeries are performed, there will usually be two teams of microsurgeons using the diploscopes.
