GIF Sizes: How to Keep Files Small in Emails

GIF Sizes How to Keep Files Small in Emails

GIFs that are too large and complex can clip emails, slow loading times, and produce a negative experience for readers.

That’s a big challenge for marketers. In the limited medium of email, you need to use all of the tricks in your bag to grab the reader’s attention. So, if you want to utilize the perfect GIF but it’s too big, what do you do?

We’re going to talk about GIF sizes today, giving you some insight into how marketing with GIFs can be a little bit easier in email marketing. Hopefully, the ideas below can improve your click-through rates and drive a little extra revenue.

Let’s get started.

Limit Image Transitions

GIF file sizes are directly impacted by the number of transitions, the type of transition, and the quality of the image in question.

It’s important to note that GIFs, as we know them, are a series of images separated by transitions. GIFs are distinct from videos in that series of images used displays much more slowly. That’s why GIFs are easily distinguished from high-quality videos.

The frames per second are much lower. Each additional frame per second means a larger file size.

So, your job is to cut the GIF down to its essential images. Further, try not to blend or fade image transitions, as those additions will only add more weight to the file. A simple GIF works just as well as a complex one, especially when you’re working with animated GIFs in email files.

Simplify Colors With Illustrations

Complex images that incorporate movement tend to have a series of fine colorations.

If the camera quality of the image is high, there are thousands of fine distinctions in coloration, all of which factor into file size. The trouble is, users don’t pay attention to those details when reading an email.

The smarter GIF alternative is to use illustrations composed of only a few different colors. Even if you use 14 colors in your illustration, it will be infinitesimal compared to a high-quality photo/video.

You can then add a lot of movement to the illustration without the file getting too big.

Find a Functional Converter

An excellent video to GIF converter is going to be your best friend. There are lots of options to work with but you’ll find that it’s tough to identify the most user-friendly ones.

Find a converter that allows you to translate high-quality videos into small, rudimentary GIFs. If you can do that, you can use the converter to create everything in between.

Make sure you bookmark the converter that works best for your purposes because, somehow, they’re slippery and hard in the search results to find when you need them most.
