Effects Of Synthetic Marijuana Compound in the Vascular System

Researchers at the University Colima (UCOL) studied the effect of synthetic cannabinoids a chemical compound in the vascular tone in order to know their mechanisms of action and in the future you can design new drugs that regulate blood pressure in people who suffer from diseases like diabetes arteriosclerosis and hypertension among other pathologies.

The plant cannabis sativa (marijuana) contains about 65 cannabinoids, which cause different effects among which the main cannabinoid-induced psychoactive are on this floor the tetra hydrocannabinol. However, in the investigation of the UCOL used synthetic cannabinoids that are regulated by the administration for the control of drugs which are allowed to conduct research.

Dr. Enrique Sanchez Pastor, head of the UCOL research points out that cannabinoids exert their effect mainly through receptors, which are proteins that are expressed in the cell membrane from different tissues of various organisms including humans. For example, CB1 receptors are mainly in the central nervous system, and the CB2 in the immune system. Additionally, it is known that our body produces substances similar to cannabinoids known as Endocannabinoids.

In arterial tissue we find that there are two types of receptors the CB1 and the CB2. In our laboratory we have found evidence that the first induces relaxation of the aorta artery through a mechanism that involves the modulation of ion channels potassium and calcium which are activated and inhibit respectively. While for the second type we observe an opposite effect since its activation causes vasoconstriction i.e. the narrowing of the blood vessel explains Dr. Enrique Sanchez Pastor.

In the case of blood pressure add known cannabinoids to dilate the arteries, and blood pressure decreases. Therefore, to know the mechanisms of action of cannabinoids, could design new drugs which decrease blood pressure in pathologies such as hypertension. With the research we try to elucidate the mechanisms of action of cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoids, in experimental animal models we extract the artery aorta which comes from the heart in order to observe the effects of application of cannabinoids on the tension of the artery.

In addition, the laboratory also studies are underway in diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension induced in animals. In the arteriosclerosis arteries become stiff, and it has been observed that the effect of cannabinoids is more pronounced than in healthy animals details the UCOL specialist.

In the case of model of diabetes have been reported similar effects with cannabinoids, however in these animals the arteries have a trait of sagging. This type of research will help to know the mode of action of cannabinoids, which will allow developing drugs that govern muscle tone by eliminating the side effects that have been seen in laboratory animals since in our case we have observed that in rats in which diabetes was induced, cannabinoid Administration makes them aggressive.
